About five weeks ago, I decided to take a break from blogging. There were several reasons for doing so. First, I was just intellectually tired. During the first six months of this year, I had drawn more attention to my writings and to our ministry than I had considered. With that came some scrutiny and criticism. I made the mistake of taking some of it too personally and then compounded that mistake by occasionally responding to the criticism too personally. Once I realized this, I decided it was time to give myself a time out to refocus, take a few deep breaths and make sure I regained a correct tone and perspective on my writing, ministry and life in general.
Next, I have taken the last month to try and refocus our church leadership team on some aspects of our ministry that we needed to address. This is by no means a completed task, but I do believe I have a fresh vision and a very direct strategy for leading our team to a fresh level of excellence across our church ministry. I have laid out my future steps in my own mind and have a new determination to implement the vision that the Lord has laid on my heart across our ministries.
In addition, I wanted to make sure that I have the goals of my blog clearly delineated in my own mind. I will admit upfront and freely that I have the attention span of a humming bird and multi-tasking is my middle name. Because of those idiosyncrasies, I can appear to be unfocusedeven fickle. I often use a crude analogy of how I wake up most mornings. I say that I feel like a mosquito in a nudist colony. I know what I want to do. I just dont know where to start. Because of that tendency, my blog can appear to be random if not haphazard. So I wanted to spend some time thinking about the purpose of the blog.
Sohaving worked through those issues, I feel ready for re-entry. I hope you have your seatbelts firmly buckled, your seat upright and your tray table in its locked position, because IM BACK!
So what will be the purpose of this blog be in the future? Well, the answer is no single thing, but actually it will be intentionally multi-faceted. I like to think of it as a diamond with multiple sides which give character and context to the whole crystal, yet permitting each side to have a unique perspective and contribution to the whole. So heres a list of what I hope to address on this site:
Views on Northside More and more members of our church and school family visit this blog by evidence of my web stats and the feedback I receive. I plan on using the blog to let people hear from me from a different perspective, to address matters that may not be convenient or even appropriate to approach from the pulpit, to add additional clarity to something Ive said or done and to help us connect personally. Over three thousand people are connected to our church and school and it is impossible to keep a personal touch with each of them. This gives me one more opportunity to keep the lines of communication open.
Views on my Family Sometimes you will find the personal ramblings of a Dad/Husband/Pastor. I, of course, have family who visit my blog and want to know what the latest crisis is that may be invading the Burrell household. Other times, it might simply be the ruminations of a man trying to keep it all together providing some honest insight which may resonate with others who are in my same position. In some ways, I am maniacally private and in others ways frightfully candid. If you find that confusing, dont worry about itso do I. But from time to time, expect me to sound forth on something thats going on in the Burrell house.
Views on Fundamentalism/Evangelicalism As a lifelong GUBA (Grew Up Born Again), I have nearly a half-century of perspective on the passing parade of conservative Christianity. Im too conservative for most self-identified Evangelicals and Im too far off-the-plantation for many of my fundy friends. I actually like to be in that position. Im not satisfied parroting the party line; Im more interested in probing the party line. Sometimes that gets a little uncomfortable, but I find thats when I learn the most. One thing you can always count on from me…above all else, I am interested in being Biblical.
Views on Culture and Philosophy One of the reasons I chose a play on the term World Views as my blog title is because I am keenly aware that ones worldview impacts how he or she discerns, interprets and responds to the images, messages and movements of our culture. A Christian World View is absolutely vital for todays believer as we navigate this world filled with dangerous philosophy and unsound values. I find it interesting to examine how ones world view impacts how we digest the messages and opportunities of our generation and I think it important that we examine these issues thoughtfully and openly.
Finally, you can expect Miscellaneous Views. These will be the occasional rants, the things that I find oddly amusing or ironic, those sudden brain bursts that demand I write something somewhere for someone. I also plan on inserting the occasional book review, posting a link to a blog article I found stimulating or to give you a heads up on something I think you may find interesting. In other words, whatever else might hit my fancy.
WordPress gives the blogger an option that Blogger.com did not give CATEGORIES. So I will begin placing my articles in categories so that you can locate them easier and perhaps ignore altogether those that just irritate you.
I plan on being pointed, but fair. I will not be afraid of raising controversial issues, but I will do a better job of keeping a grace-filled spirit when I do. I dont expect (or necessarily want) everyone to agree with me and Id encourage you to push back when you think Ive taken an illogical leap or missed something important. (I will not censor comments except for language, spam or an abusive tone toward another commenter.) I hope to challenge the way you think and in the process, I hope to challenge the way I think. It is my desire to stimulate as well as educate.
And in the end, I would have to honestly say that a blog is fundamentally selfish. I often say that if I dont write, Ill just explode. Its just how God wired me. I dont find myself particularly profound or insightful. I just need to write. So this will be my forum. Feel free to visit often or infrequently. If you have a blog, consider linking me if you would. (If you have previously linked with me, you will need to change the URL to simply www.danburrell.com in order to link to this blog.) I will do my best to post at least a couple of times per week, perhaps more if time allows. Much of what I write will actually be material I may use in a sermon, in my EPNews column, in a book or two Im penning or just simply part of my own journal of living.
Thanks for reading and listening. Stay tuned.more to come!
